Gorillas grab fourth with strong second half

WILSTON Grange has leapt past Bond University to snatch fourth spot following Round 13 of the QAFL Women’s competition on Saturday. The Gorillas were neck-and-neck throughout the first half, leading by nine points at the main break before booting four goals to one in the second half to come away with the 7.11 (53) to 3.1 (19) victory.

In a massive mid-table clash between fourth and fifth, it was the latter who came away with the four points in front of a home crowd at Hickey Park. Dominating the air with 50 marks to 14, the Gorillas had 19 more disposals and 20 more inside 50s to also take control of field position.

Following a goalless first term, the floodgates opened in the second as the home side took a nine-point lead into half-time before a three goals to one term stretched that advantage out to 26 points with a quarter to play. Holding the Bull Sharks scoreless in the final quarter, Wilston Grange kicked the only major and secured the comfortable 34-point win.

Tahlia Kendall (three goals) and Naomi Celebre (two) were the multiple goalkickers for the winners, while in an even team performance, Keyshia Matenga recorded 20 disposals, six marks and four clearances to be named best on by the coaches. She was well supported by the likes of Hayley Finning (18 disposals, two marks, four clearances and four inside 50s) and Kaiya Hides (18 disposals, three marks, four clearances and three inside 50s).

For the Bull Sharks, Grace Moodie managed a match-high 23 disposals, as well as three marks and four tackles, while skipper Shannon Nolan recorded 19 disposals and laid five tackles. Kendra Blattman kicked two of her side’s three goals, as Jasmyn Davidson was named in the best by her coaches in defeat.

The result saw the sides switch places, and while their finals spots are essentially assured thanks to an eight-point and percentage gap on the rest of the field, the Gorillas have the slight percentage edge on the Bull Sharks heading into the last three games.
