Finals contenders shrink as EMP do unthinkable

ROUND 12 of the Victorian Women’s Premier Firsts competition saw some big results that have big implications on who potentially makes finals.

Melbourne vs Essendon Maribyrnong Park

In one of the absolute upsets of the season, Essendon Maribyrnong Park did what no other side has been able to do all season – defeat the previously undefeated Dees.

Despite being bowled out, Melbourne still made a very competitive 164. Ella Hayward’s innings was the backbone of the Dees innings, making a 64.

In reply, a 101-run opening partnership from Makinley Blows and returning star Molly Strano really got the Bombers’ innings going, and they reached the target with just under 15 overs to go. Unsurprisingly, it was Blows and Strano who top scored for their side with 70 and 49 respectively.

From a bowling perspective, Samantha Bates and Katia Jomini took three wickets each for the Bombers, while Hasrat Gill was the only wicket taker for the Dees with three.

Prahran vs Ringwood

Ringwood convincingly beat Prahran to keep its finals hopes well and truly alive. Prahran batted first, and made 8/180 off their 50 overs. Ellie Threlkeld top scored with 56, while Samara Dulvin made a handy 44.

Meanwhile for the Rams, Tess Flintoff had an excellent return to Rams colours, taking 3/27 off her 10 overs, which included one maiden. Erin Carroll also had an excellent innings with the ball, talking 2/31 off her 10 overs.

In reply, a 102 from Bhavisha Devchand meant that the target was no issue for the Rams, and they reached the target in the 29th over. Olivia Henry also made a handy 40.

This result means the end of Prahran’s finals chances for this season, while Ringwood’s chance is still alive, but it cannot afford to lose another game.

Box Hill vs Dandenong

Box Hill kept its season well and truly alive, also ensuring Dandenong’s is on a knife’s edge. Batting first, the Mustangs were bowled out for 158 inside 40 overs. A 76 from captain Zoe Griffiths was the standout of the Mustangs innings, but eight of the Mustangs batters only made single figure scores.

Meanwhile for the Panthers, Kimberley Garth and Poppy Gardner topped the bowling tally with three wickets each, while Chelsea Moscript picked up two.

In reply, after a slow start Dandenong recovered a bit, but were ultimately bowled out for 120. Uvindee Wijesena top scored for Dandenong with 35.

Meanwhile for the Mustangs, Kirstie Gordon was the absolute star with the ball, taking 4/20 off 8.2 overs, which included a whopping four maidens.

Plenty Valley vs Carlton

Plenty Valley’s forgettable season continued, this time at the hands of the Blues. After bowling the Bats out for 144, Carlton only took 20.3 overs to reach the target and they did not even lose a wicket.

For Carlton, Madison Albers was the star with the ball with four wickets, but also bowled a whopping five maidens. Rebeka Vandort also had a stellar innings with the ball, taking three wickets.

Meanwhile with the bat, openers Sophie Reid and Cailin Green both had great inning with the bat, making 69 and 42 respectively.
