Aussies breeze to T20 victory, take out U19 Ashes

AUSTRALIA has taken out the 2023 Under 19 Ashes series after claiming a 10-wicket T20 win over England yesterday. Openers Harry Dixon (84 off 56) and Liam Blackford (72 off 49) steered a straightforward chase for the hosts at Ian Healy Oval, hunting down England’s respectable 8-158 with 17 balls to spare.

The Victorian pair remained unbeaten across near-equally damaging knocks, with both players putting the cherry on top of respectively prolific campaigns which yielded a century apiece. Dixon’s power hitting came to the fore as he notched eight boundaries, while Blackford peeled off nine in the definitive partnership.

It was the visitors who won the toss and elected to bat first though, and things were looking good as the likes of George Thomas (39) and Sheridon Gumbs (26) started positively. England’s run rate was steep at the halfway mark, though a collapse of 5-27 thereafter yielded a total less than the 200-mark which seemed gettable.

Luke Holt‘s consecutive breakthroughs saw him finish with match-best figures of 2-21, while Will Salzmann (2-25) and Tom Straker (2-35) also chimed in with multiple wickets. Their efforts were of stark contrast to England’s eight bowlers, five of whom went at an economy rate of over 10 runs per six balls.

Yesterday’s T20 capped off the six-game, multi-format series which Australia won 4-2, having dominated the white ball legs 3-1. The two sides will again face off in a similar tournament later in the year, this time in England, before the 2024 Under 19 World Cup.
