Rookie Me Central’s Collaborative 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown: #3 Jasmine Garner

IN a new exciting collaborative countdown, Rookie Me Central has teamed up with other independent media organisations to bring a 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown. Every weekday from now until December 17, a new player will be named starting from 50th down to 1st, stemming from a combined eight Top 50 submissions. Among those who submitted Top 50s include Siren Sport‘s Gemma Bastiani, Women’s Australian Rules Football (WARF) Radio‘s Peter Holden, and a combined Outer Sanctum team’s Top 50.

Jasmine Garner is the dream tall forward, that can also play in the midfield. She is a strong mark and tall target, who’s can also win plenty of the ball.

Originally recruited to Collingwood in the inaugural season, she made her debut in Round 1 and she made a little bit of history on that night when she kicked the first goal of the match.  Not only was it the first goal for her side in the history of the competition, but the first goal in the history of the entire league too.

After two seasons at Collingwood, she sensationally moved across to North Melbourne with a number of her teammates before North’s first season in the competition. She had a great 2020 season, but got even better in 2021.

In 2020, she averaged 20.1 disposals a game, which was the third highest amongst her teammates. She averaged 4.6 marks a game in the 2020 season, which was the highest amongst her teammates.

Garner also kicked the second most goals of any North player in 2020 behind Kaitlyn Ashmore. She won the AFL Coaches’ Association AFLW Champion Player of the Year in 2020 too.

Her stats continued to rise in 2021, with her average disposals rising to 20.6 per game. She increased her total goal tally too up to nine, which was the equal highest amongst the North cohort.

Although her average marks per game dropped slightly, it was still 4.5 which is a significant figure.

In 2021 she came third in the AFL Coaches’ Association AFLW Champion Player of the Year behind Alyce Parker and Kiara Bowers.

In terms of this countdown, all of the contributors unanimously agreed that Garner belonged in their top 50. All bar one agreed she belonged in their top 10. One person put her at 32nd, but the vast majority put her in their top five.
