Around the Country: Kings rise to produce jaw-dropping comeback
COORPAROO produced one of the great QAFLW comebacks to remain the competition’s only unbeaten side, storming from 19 points down at three-quarter time to boot five unanswered goals in the final term and defeat reigning premiers Southport 6.2 (38) to 3.7 (25) in the match of the round. Jacinta Baldwick was outstanding in the engine room with 23 disposals and seven tackles, while Ayla Fetahagic (19 disposals, six marks) and Chelsea Chesterfield (two goals) were also prominent. For the Sharks, Ella Maurer, Olivia Meagher and Steph O’Brien all worked hard in a losing cause.
Bond University continued its dominant run of form with a 14.11 (95) to 0.2 (2) demolition of Maroochydore, piling on 9.7 to 0.1 in the first half to end the contest early. Evy Reeves was commanding through the midfield with 30 disposals, eight clearances and eight tackles, while Shannon Nolan (23 disposals, seven inside 50s) kept the ball flowing. Kendra Blattman, Annabel Lynch and Isabella Iverach each booted four goals in a relentless team performance. Gabi Simpson (22 disposals) and Sophie Schulze (15 tackles) battled hard for the Roos in a difficult afternoon.
Wilston Grange snapped University of Queensland’s unbeaten record, holding off a spirited Red Lionesses fightback to win 10.4 (64) to 9.4 (58). Queensland drew within seven points at the final change after a strong third term, but Wilston Grange steadied to take the points. Zimmorlei Farquharson was the match-winner with five goals, complemented by Keleejay Bingham, Mackenzie Findlay and Tshinta Kendall. Luka Yoshida-Martin (24 disposals, seven clearances, 12 tackles, two goals) and Eva Sartor (eight clearances, 14 tackles) were the Red Lionesses’ best in a gutsy performance.
Broadbeach claimed the most historic win of the round – and arguably the most emotional result of the season – with the Cats defeating Moreton Bay 7.13 (55) to 5.0 (30) to record their first ever victory in their inaugural QAFLW season. A four-goals-to-nil third term proved the difference, with Alicia Withers (32 disposals, seven clearances, seven tackles), Drew Barnes (24 disposals, eight marks, a goal) and Jasmine Single (24 disposals, six inside 50s) outstanding, while Alice Minahan booted three goals. For the winless Lions, Arden Quilliam (29 disposals) and Jessica Davy (27 disposals, eight tackles, two goals) were the standouts in defeat.
The day’s lowest-scoring contest produced a tight Morningside win, with the Panthers grinding out a 1.8 (14) to 0.4 (4) result over Aspley in a game that yielded just one goal for the match — kicked in the second term. Morningside did not score after half-time but did enough, with Aspley managing only three points in the second half. Laura Roy (26 disposals, ten clearances, five inside 50s) led the way for the Panthers, supported by Indiana Williams and Greta Liell-Cock. Ex-AFLW player Ella Smith (22 disposals, eight tackles, seven inside 50s) was Aspley’s best in a frustrating afternoon, with Kaetsi French (19 disposals, three marks) also catching the eye.
